Prof. Dr. Alberto Sicilia invited to speak at the 2007 International Osteology Symposium in Monaco
“Connecting Science with Practice” was the
slogan of the International Symposium of the Osteology
Foundation, which took place in Monaco from 10-12th May
2007. Some 2,500 participants from 61 countries became
acquainted with the latest scientific studies and the newest
treatment techniques in bone and tissue regeneration.
Prof. Dr. Alberto Sicilia was one of the two Spaniards
invited to speak at the event. His speech, entitled “Minimally
invasive microsurgical approach of smile reconstruction
with reconstructive and implant surgery”, was followed
with great interest by professionals attending the meeting.
Implant patients are not only looking for new permanent
teeth, but also for a pretty smile. To achieve a smooth
perfect tissue around the implant, there has to be sufficient
bone volume. This conference was an opportunity for 80
experienced researchers and clinicians from 16 countries
to present strategies for preserving and regenerating the
bone, both functionally and aesthetically. There was also
talk of the current expectations in regard to regeneration
treatments, clinical procedures and future trends.

The Road To Success:
Best Aesthetics, With Immediate Function. Organized by Clinica
Sicilia
Saturday
24th March, held at the Hotel de la Reconquista in Oviedo,
was the training course El camino hacia el éxito:
la mejor estética con function inmediata (“The
Road To Success: Best Aesthetics, With Immediate Function”),
given by Doctors Darío Adolfi and Alberto Sicilia.
The event, organised by Clínica Sicilia in collaboration
with Nobel Biocare, was attended by 150 professionals
from all over Spain.
Firstly, Dr. Alberto Sicilia gave the presentation
La estética
basada en un buen planteamiento quirúgico (“Aesthetics
Based On a Good Surgical Procedure”). The presentation stressed
the best pre-surgical diagnosis is achieved by means of a CT, Volumetric
Tomography and computer-assisted surgery. Once the planning stage
is complete, the surgical guides must be created, which are designed
using
virtual surgery processes.
Furthermore, it is important to use implants
designed for low-density bone and for immediate function, minimally
invasive periodontal plastic surgery techniques and the creation
of anatomically adapted immediate implant provisionals. Today,
through the combination of these techniques, it is possible
to perform complex
treatments with immediate dental replacement in one surgery.
Dr. Darío Adolfi, graduate in Medicine and Dentistry from the
University of Sao Paolo, reputed ceramist and international speaker,
spoke of La estética conseguida mediante un tratamiento protésico
excelente (“Aesthetics Achieved Through Superior Prosthetic Treatment”).
His form of integrating clinical prosthodontic aspects
into the laboratory proved highly interesting for the course
participants, offering a
rigorous and innovative educational approach.
He gave a detailed
presentation
on important topics such as: the shape and layout of the teeth,
harmony and symmetry (balance between natural variations
and the ideal),
natural tooth colour and light dynamics, surface texture and
shine, provisional
restorations, the use of implant abutments and the use of alumina-zirconium
ceramics.
